IT shops are in search of variable infrastructure pricing, which will take them to the cloud

By Patrick Thibodeau www.computerworld.com  July 20, 2010 06:00 AM ET

Computerworld – When debt collection agency Deca Financial Services LLC was formed last year it had two IT paths: It could buy its own servers, software licenses, and hire an administrator, at a total of cost of about $700,000, or it could turn to a cloud provider with first year costs of about $60,000.

At first, James Hefty, director of operations at the Fishers, Ind.-based company, didn’t believe a cloud provider was a possible option. It had financial compliance rules and concerns such as a client audit.

But the provider, in this case BlueLock LLC in nearby Indianapolis, said it could meet all the security rules, service levels and disaster recovery needs. “We very quickly realized with a little bit of analysis that everyone benefits from it,” Hefty said.

Deca has its own network, router and firewall and server in an Hewlett-Packard blade system and VMware environment.”

Cloud computing is a private affair

Posted by brennels on May 13, 2010

By Harshal Kallyanpur, InformationWeek, May 10, 2010

It would be safe to say that today, cloud computing is a reality in India. Once regarded with great apprehension, this IT delivery model is slowly beginning to find a fair share of takers in the country.

Over the past few months major software and hardware vendors announced partnerships with telecom and data center service providers to provide a cloud-based service-oriented IT delivery model in India. Organizations such as Reliance Communications, Tata Communications, Wipro, IBM and Sify recently announced their cloud-based services. Other organizations such as Netmagic have been offering cloudbased services for almost a year now.”

Network Virtualization Will Precede Private Cloud

Posted by brennels on March 16, 2010

Written By: Greg Ness on http://cloudcomputing.sys-con.com

When VMware entered the production data center it was the beginning of a massive IT disruption with profound implications for careers, vendors and the next tech innovation cycle, driven by deep reductions in network operating expenses and equally uplifting increases in network flexibility and intelligence.

VMware set the stage for the multibillion dollar system virtualization category by allowing operating systems and applications to be easily set up and moved on top of commodity server hardware.  They automated systems that had been requiring ever increasing amounts of manual labor as data centers grew ever more complex by creating an abstracting layer between software and hardware.”

VMware cloud talk stirs interest — and some skepticism

Posted by amcanty on September 3, 2009

“SAN FRANCISCO — VMware is pretty well positioned for a cloud computing push given its virtualization strengths, but even ardent VMware shops aren’t quite ready to swallow its cloud sales pitch whole.

Company CEO Paul Maritz took the VMworld 2009 stage sans tie and jacket on Tuesday to sell a number of upcoming vSphere tools and the company’s cloud agenda to nearly 15,000 attendees.

“A lot of us have to deal with today’s data center, built up with these pillars of complexity that kind of work. How do we get from there, to this promised land [of cloud computing]?” he asked.

His answer, of course, was VMware. Specifically, Maritz claimed that the cloud-oriented vSphere can solve the problems associated with data center complexity.

Customers, many of whom are intrigued by the notion of cloud computing but also a bit put off by what they see as a lack of security and controls, want fewer words and canned demos and more real-life proof points.

Rick J. Scherer, a systems administrator at San Diego Data Processing Corp., a nonprofit IT organization that handles the city’s IT needs, said the cloud vision sounds promising, but he isn’t convinced it can work in real environments, despite VMware’s attempts to show attendees how it works at VMworld.

“Show me a real VMotion of a virtual machine from my data center to [cloud hosting provider] Verizon within the vSphere client, not a fake demo doing a VMotion between two hosts in the same room,” Scherer said.

The chief technology officer of a big Chicago-based financial company that runs thousands of virtual machines (VMs) expressed some confusion around where VMware is going in comparison with its parent company, EMC Corp.

“The Maritz vision is interesting and likely directionally correct, but many steps from reality,” he said via email. “Interestingly, but perhaps not surprisingly, EMC has much the same pitch for what they are doing internally. We have built an internal cloud on vSphere and done some work with Amazon (which uses Xenworks not ESX as the hypervisor) on secure public clouds.”

The CTO, who declined to be identified, maintained that companies like his want the potential benefits of cloud computing — such as adding scale as needed and pay-as-you-go computing — but he reiterated the usual corporate concerns about security and manageability.

“The compelling factor is speed and flexibility rather than cost. Challenges are manageability, reliability and security,” he said. “The cloud business model is a little vaporous (pun intended) right now. Also, data movement didn’t get any easier, so this is better for compute-intensive rather than data-intensive workloads.”

VMware extends vCloud with self-provisioning, APIs

Posted by amcanty on September 2, 2009

“VMware Inc.’s new vCloud Express cloud brokerage service, announced today, was designed to compete head-on in the public cloud market.

The service offers self-service provisioning of virtual machines (VMs) through the company’s vCloud portal to hosting partners. Also at VMworld 2009, the company discussed the general release of its vCloud application programming interface (API), paralleling other public cloud providers like GoGrid, Rackspace and Amazon.

VMware is pitching the vCloud Express service as an inexpensive and efficient way for enterprises that already use VMware virtualization to start extending their deployments into the cloud, with a minimum of pain and suffering and the ability to choose among competing vendors offering VMware cloud services.

“When you hear vCloud Express, think fast and cheap, or fast and cost-effective, I should say,” said VMware CEO Paul Maritz at his VMworld keynote speech, delivered from San Francisco. Maritz said that VMware is releasing its API for vCloud and would strive for broad functionality and acceptance by cloud users, saying the company would hew to as-yet-undetermined standards for cloud computing.

“The vCloud API has been submitted to standards organizations to get a common standard we can all rally behind,” Maritz said. He did not specify which standards bodies those were, but it is likely that the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) will be involved. VMware is a long-time DTMF member.”

As if by cloud magic…

Posted by brennels on August 19, 2009

I read this post recently from VMlover and thought it was pretty entertaining and worth shareing. Certainly as the Cloud becomes a more adopted platform there will be a need for migrating workloads across virtual public and private cloud infrastructure. The more interesting question is however, will the Virtualization vendors come together for a standardized platform that will allow cross virtualiziation platform movement?

As if by cloud magic…By: VMlover

“Since my last post where I discussed the Microsoft Azure cloud service and highlighted that I felt companies competing in the cloud space such as VMware are now diversifying past the Hypervisor to reach aspirations of Cloud, and then Vmware go and do me a favor and make me look like i’m a visionary and extrememy intelligent and buy Spring Source!!!.

I have had all week to digest the views and opinions from various Industry analysts and bloggers and see what they are thinking and saying in general on the Spring acquisition and now heres my attempt (ARSE COVER DISCLAIMER – I am not a Software Architect/coder/guru/white sandals & sock wearer so excuse any rubbish) at trying to predict where the purchase will lead VMware’s current business model and what will evole from the acquisition, lastly I also highlight what the industry needs from any of Vmware’s clouds offerings.”

Rackspace Private Cloud Leverages VMware to Extend Enterprise Computing on Demand

Posted by brennels on July 31, 2009

Rackspace® Hosting, the world’s leader in hosting, today announced its new Private Cloud offering, which allows customers to run the centrally managed VMware virtualization platform on private dedicated hardware environments. Rackspace recognizes the demand from enterprises for a more flexible and scalable hosting solution. Although multi-tenant cloud solutions are very flexible and cost-effective, they are not always right for every segment. The Rackspace Private Cloud’s single-tenant architecture offers increased control and security, while still maintaining the scalability, flexibility and resource optimization that make shared cloud offerings so compelling. “

“Rackspace provides an excellent option for customers to take advantage of the cloud,” said Dan Chu, vice president, emerging products and markets, VMware. “Enterprises who purchase the Rackspace Private Cloud can count on the powerful combination of VMware’s industry-leading virtualization platform and Rackspace’s reliable hosting environment and infrastructure.”

Cloud Computing; Virtualization Technologies Are the IT Future: EMC CEO

Posted by brennels on June 2, 2009

EMC CEO Joe Tucci recently named “The Next Big Things in IT” as the Virtual Data Center, Cloud Computing, Virtual Clients and Virtual Applications.

Since EMC owns VMware, Tucci obviously has a vested interest in virtualization, but even allowing for a tendency to envision the future of Enterprise IT in a very EMC-centric way, one thing is certain: IT is moving towards virtualization and many infrastructure engineers are making the move to the cloud.
